Speaking 1 Topic: Sleep or stay up before an exam?

You have been very busy and unable to prepare for an examination the next day. You could either stay up late to study and sleep less or just study less and get a full night’s sleep. Which will you choose?

In the 15 seconds I have for note-taking, here’s what I will jot down:

  1. Sleep
  2. Reason 1: Can’t think
  3. Reason 2: Focus on important topics
  4. Stayed up whole night and scored badly

I would definitely prefer to sleep well before an examination rather than stay up and miss sleep. First, I need eight hours of sleep to function well the next day. I can think with clarity and write in a focused manner only when I get a good night’s sleep. Also, I’ve seen that I study better when there is a limited number of hours available. I would use a few hours to identify important topics and then focus on them before I went to bed. I once remember having stayed up through the night for an examination the next day. I was groggy the next morning and was unable to focus on the questions. I scored quite poorly and had then made up my mind that I would never skip sleep before an examination.
