Speaking 1 Topic: Math and Science? Or Humanities and Social Sciences?

Some people believe that students should spend more time in math and science classes rather than humanities and social science classes. Do you agree or disagree? Give reasons to support your choice.

My notes:

  1. Disagree
  2. Reason 1: Empathy
  3. Reason 2: Interconnectedness
  4. Example of friend

I have always believed in the power of the humanities and social sciences to make a difference. Therefore, I would certainly say that the more time young minds spend on these areas, the better it would be for the future of mankind. First, I strongly believe that the humanities and social sciences teach empathy and a connection with fellow human beings. Further, these academic areas also help us understand the role of all sentient beings on this planet and the interconnectedness of us all. Let me share an example. I had a friend in school who focused on math and science, because her parents wanted her to become an engineer. However, she decided to take up Sociology in college, because she felt a keen interest in the subject. Today, she heads a startup that provides healthcare solutions for indigenous communities in remote parts of the world.
