Q1: Roommate Quality

This is one of the latest TOEFL Speaking topics for questions 1:

If you are going to choose a new roommate, which of the following qualities do you think is the best: (1) quietness, (2) friendliness, (3) cleanliness?

Feel free to share your thoughts about how you would approach this question!  😉

I need to choose an option about which I can speak confidently and with genuineness. I give a lot of importance to cleanliness. Therefore, I will choose that option.

In the 15 seconds of note-taking time that I have, I will jot down the following:

  1. Introduction - Cleanliness is very important to me. I value it more than friendliness or quietness in a roommate.
  2. Reason 1 - Hygiene and health are interconnected.
  3. Reason 2 - I need to have a pleasant and comfortable time in my room.
  4. Reason 3 - I've had a terrible experience with an earlier roommate. He used to leave dirty plates lying around, and we had to call pest control.

Here's how I would attempt my answer:

When choosing a new roommate, I would give priority to cleanliness. Hygiene is more important to me than friendliness or quietness in a roommate. I've always believed that health and hygiene are interconnected. I would be spending just a few hours in my room every day, and I would want those hours to be pleasant and comfortable. I've also had a bad experience with an unhygienic roommate. He used to leave dirty plates with leftover food lying around in the room. Things got so bad I had to call pest control! Therefore, cleanliness would be something I would value in a roommate.

In terms of choosing a new roommate, I would definitely stay with the person who seems to be quiet. Quiet environment is very important to me. A place that contains a lot of noise gives bad concentration to people. Low concentration will affect personal learning ability and sleeping quality. As I tend to be an introverted person, I will spend more time in the room than others. It might be hard for me to recover from any interruption. Hence. I will prefer to live with roommates that have similar personalities with me and respect others to keep quietness.

Verin,  I like your TEOFL response.  It is nicely organized.  I would suggest making sure to stay in first person rather than switching in and out of 1st and 3rd person.  See what I mean below.

In terms of choosing a new roommate, I would definitely want a roommate who is quiet above all else.  A quiet environment is very important to me because I need a quiet place to study.  A place that has a lot of notice makes it very difficult for me to concentrate.  When I can't concentrate, it affects my learning ability and sleeping quality.  Because I am an introverted person, I spend more time in my room than others.  It might be hard for me to get back to my studies if I have too many loud interruptions for roommates.  Therefore, I would prefer to live with a roommate that has a similar quiet personality like mine so we can respect each others quiet space.
